Move On – July 30, 2024

Posted on July 30, 2024

Dear MoveOn member,

The New York Times reported yesterday on the extraordinarily tight race for control of Congress, with this stark assessment: “The difference between Mike Johnson and Hakeem Jeffries as speaker could come down to a few thousand voters across a few congressional districts.”1

Right now, it’s Republicans that have the edge, according to the very latest from the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, whose forecasts are considered the gold standard, and that’s what we’re about to change, Kendall, as we do everything in our power to stop MAGA extremists in the U.S. Capitol from enacting the Project 2025 takeover.2

Today, MoveOn members endorsed 21 Democratic candidates for the U.S. House in critical races across the country—races that are expected to be nail-biters all the way through Election Day and come down to as little as 1 or 2 percentage points. We have the power to win these races and stop the Project 2025 takeover in Congress if we come together and help these 21 Democrats, starting right now.

Will you donate $5 a month to help us have the resources to do the grassroots organizing, media, ads, and voter turnout to end MAGA control of the House and stop the Project 2025 takeover in Congress?

Yes, I’ll chip in monthly.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.

Kirsten Engel, one of the candidates MoveOn endorsed today and the Democratic candidate for Arizona’s 6th District, is an environmental attorney, public schools champion, and advocate for working-class families. She said this about MoveOn’s endorsement: “I lost AZ-06 by 5,000 votes in 2022. With MoveOn’s help, we can close the gap in this pivotal 2024 race impacting the presidency, Senate, House, and abortion access.”

Derek Tran, who’s running to represent California’s 45th District, is a veteran, consumer rights advocate, city commissioner, and small-business owner who had this to say about MoveOn’s endorsement today: “We need MoveOn’s grassroots support to flip this district.”

As a grassroots organization funded by you, our members, we cannot support these candidates and help put them over the top without your financial support.

Will you chip in $5 a month to help take the House gavel from white Christian nationalist Speaker Mike Johnson, stop the Project 2025 takeover, and enable Democrats to restore and expand our freedoms and democracy and build an economy that enables everyone to thrive?

Yes, I’ll chip in monthly.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.

In addition to Engel and Tran, the full list of candidates MoveOn endorsed today, after MoveOn members in their districts voted to support them with at least 66% of the vote, includes California’s Adam Gray (CA-13), Rudy Salas (CA-22), Will Rollins (CA-41), and Dave Min (CA-47); Colorado’s Adam Frisch (CO-3) and Dr. Yadira Caraveo (CO-8); Connecticut’s Jahana Hayes (CT-5); Iowa’s Lanon Baccam (IA-3); Illinois’ Eric Sorensen (IL-17); Nebraska’s Tony Vargas (NE-2); New Jersey’s Susan Altman (NJ-7); New Mexico’s Gabriel Vasquez (NM-2); New York’s Laura Gillen (NY-4), Josh Riley (NY-19), and John Mannion (NY-22); Oregon’s Janelle Bynum (OR-5) and Andrea Salinas (OR-6); Virginia’s Missy Cotter Smasal (VA-2); and Wisconsin’s Katrina Shankland (WI-3).

These candidates are inspiring progressives running in swing districts where elections are determined at the margins. Our help can make all of the difference. And more could not be on the line, as our freedoms, democracy, and economy teeter on a knife’s edge.

Together, we have the power to win in November to end MAGA control of the House. It’s up to us. Join us.

Yes, I’ll chip in monthly.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

–Mohammad, Nita, Mona, Oscar, and the rest of the team

Want to support MoveOn’s work? Voters just defied history and stopped a MAGA wave of extremism at the polls. But there is more work to do to end the filibuster, codify abortion rights into law, and defend our freedoms, our families, and our futures. We can accomplish all this and more, but only if we work together.

Will you chip in monthly to power our critical work?

Yes, I’ll chip in $5 a month.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
