B5 Learning Center – February 28,2025

Posted on February 28, 2025

Today we…

Support new arrivals through education, relationships and community so they can thrive in their new home.

In the future, we will…

Create a community of open hearts, helping hands and supportive systems where strangers become friends and we all thrive.

Shortly after 5pm, students begin to arrive at B5. Most have worked a long day, but they take the time to come to class to learn English. B5 has created a more robust English program in the evenings so that students who find work can continue to improve their English skills while still supporting themselves and their families. The students meet ten hours a week, Monday through Thursday, with two hours of online homework.

The evening classes allow students like Than to continue honing their English skills even after finding work. He works full time at the Tyson Processing Plant, which is hard physical labor, but arrives in the evenings to practice his English. Than knows that if he improves his English, he will have more mobility in his work and he can get involved with his passion of politics.

Khalda attended the morning English classes at B5, but when she was offered a spot at Opportunity Kitchen, she knew she had to join! Opportunity Kitchen, a program through Columbia Ability Alliance, is a twelve-week vocational food training program that is designed to help students achieve job success in food service, catering, and hospitality. The program provides hands-on training and equips students with professional skills needed for success. While Opportunity Kitchen can give Khalda technical skills she needs to be successful, B5 gives her the English skills she needs to thrive. Khalda attends the evening courses so that she can continue to grow as an English speaker and provide for her family at the same time.

When Nadera was enrolled at Grace Collective, staff at B5 were concerned that she would not get the support she needed to continue learning English. Grace Collective fosters a community of grace and holistic care, where women learn job and life skills that enable them to gain sustainable employment and a secure future for themselves. Nadera knew she wanted to participate in the program so that she gained the skills that would allow her to become self-sufficient and uplift her and her entire family, but she also recognized that English is a crucial piece of that success.

The evening classes are taught by Mitch Furniss. Mitch graduated with a BA and is TESOL certified. He finds joy in helping people learn how to speak and read in English. “There is a lot going on in the world right now. A connection to a learning center not only makes a difference to our students but creates a network and community vital for their survival in a very real sense. My students are living the American dream in its most legitimate incarnation. A heroic dream that has these students working through the day, studying at night, giving their all for their families and selves to have a chance at what some of us would simply call normal. We are not just learning English here in the B5 Evening Class, we are participating in an experiment that has the potential to revolutionize lives and shatter impossibilities, and I’m just grateful to be a part of it,” says Mitch

Your donations to B5 make this robust English program in the evenings possible. Our students need to find employment to support themselves in their new home, English proficiency is an essential part of thriving in the Tri-Cities.

You make the work at B5 possible. Support like yours allows us to expand our programs to better serve our families. Thank you.

BADGER FORUM: Laliik: Sacred Mountain in Bureaucratic Quagmire

    September 1, 2026  12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
    https://badgers.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=722&club_id=392306&emtid=3209205288255

Our iconic Rattlesnake Mountain is known as Laliik to Native Americans, for whom the mountain has been sacred for millennia.  The oft repeated and dubious local claim that it's the tallest treeless mountain neglects the true significance of its geology and ecology.  Its incorporation into the Hanford Site in 1943 initiated a complex history of federal involvement, culminating in its current and persistent off-limits status.

This forum will describe the mountain's history, geology, ecology, and cultural significance and seek to understand perspectives on possible futures for one of the region's treasures.

    September 11, 2026  6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Round Table Pizza, 3201 W Court St, Pasco, WA 99301, USA

It's September, and time for our monthly gathering. We'll meet on September 11 at 6pm.  We are inviting candidates who have made it through the primary to come visit with us. We will also have 'Hate Has no Home Here' and 'Vote Blue' signs available.

We are hoping that the weather will cooperate for a picnic at the farm - 4501 W Lattin Ct, West Richland, WA. If it's hot, we have plenty of shade and misters and sprinklers to take the edge off the heat. If it's cool, we have firepits and patio heaters to take the edge off the chill. We have the Pasco Round Table reserved in the event that the weather does not cooperate, and we'll make a final announcement on Wednesday the 9th. Come gather with like-minded folks and share some fellowship, food and beverages. If we are picnicking, bring a dish to share, and Tri-City Democrats will provide utensils and plates, and napkins. If we're at the pizza location, TCD will purchase an assortment of pizzas to share. You're on your own for salad bar and beverages, though there are usually pitchers of beer provided by fellow members. We'll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this forum will detail how remarkable it and the Constitution were. Professors Jamie Mayerfeld (UW) and Johann Neem (WWU) will explain how Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison, and others, based on principles gleaned from the ancient history of the Greeks and Romans, along with contemporary ideas of the Enlightenment, forged an unprecedented synthesis, resulting in a paradigm shift in governance from monarchy to self-determination.

    It wasn’t easy.

In this hybrid program these professors will explain the context, the struggles, and the underlying principles anchored in these two founding documents to help us gain a deeper appreciation of how our country brought forth a new age of liberty and governance, one determined by “We the People….”
