WA Immigrant Solidarity Network – February 21, 2025

Posted on February 21, 2025

[Español Abajo]

In February 1926, historian and author Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week, a precursor to what we know now as Black History Month. Forty-nine years ago, President Gerald Ford made it official, urging the American people to join him “in tribute to Black History Month and the message of courage and perseverance it brings to all of us.”

Since then, February has been a time to honor the legacy of Black freedom fighters, movement builders, and everyday people who refused to back down in the face of systemic racial oppression. Now, one year from the 50th anniversary of Black History Month, we’re witnessing a full-scale attack on Black history—part of a larger effort to erase the struggles and victories of marginalized peoples.

The truth is that all of our fights are interconnected and immigrant justice is inherently tied to Black liberation. The same people trying to ban books on Black liberation are the ones gutting asylum protections, tearing families apart, and pushing an anti-immigrant agenda.

Our struggles have always been intertwined: the Black activists and organizers who led the Civil Rights Movement also paved the way for the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which eliminated racist immigration quotas. This history should serve as a reminder that we all must carry on the work of these organizers in order to defend against the same oppressive systems that harm marginalized communities today.

And we still have so much work to do: Black immigrants are disproportionately targeted by ICE and CBP — policed and criminalized by the same racist systems that have persecuted Black communities for generations. Today, mass deportation and detention are just a new face of this system of mass incarceration, often happening in the same jails and prisons built during the Jim Crow era, being run by the same for-profit prison corporations.

If we are to say that we’re committed to building an inclusive and intersectional movement for immigrant justice, we have to be just as forceful in tackling anti-Blackness in our own communities. As immigrants, we may come from different places and speak different langauges—but it is our shared commitment to humanity, love, and collective care that gives us strength.

Black immigrants and refugees are an integral part of this community and movement, and their experiences and voices must not just be acknowledged, they should be valued and uplifted. I hope you will take 10 minutes to uplift and support the incredible work being done by some of the Black-led organizations fighting for immigrant justice in Washington!

In community,

[English Above]

Catalina Velasquez

Time is running out to vote! Drop your ballot off at one of these ballot boxes: www.bentoncountywa.gov/government/elected_officials/auditor/elections/current_election/drop_boxes...If you know someone: a parent, sibling or friend, who doesn’t vote because they have a feeling it doesn’t matter.... Tell them to vote for their kids, to vote for their brother or sister, for their neighbor. It might matter to that other person and we are MUCH stronger when we do things for each other... not for ourselves. #vote #franklincountywa #bentoncountywa #tricities ... See MoreSee Less

    Tri-City Democrats - Friday, July 10, 6:00 PM

    August 14, 2026  6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
4501 W Lattin Ct, West Richland, WA 99353, USA or Pasco Round Table

It's August, and by the time we meet (at 6pm on August 14th) we should know the result of the primaries! We are inviting candidates who have made it through the primary to come visit with us. We will also have 'Hate Has no Home Here' and 'Vote Blue' signs available.

We are hoping that it won't be too hot and smoky for a picnic at the farm - 4501 W Lattin Ct, West Richland, WA. We have plenty of shade and misters and sprinklers to take the edge off the heat. We have the Pasco Round Table reserved in the event that the weather does not cooperate, and we'll make a final announcement on Wednesday the 12th. Come gather with like-minded folks and share some fellowship, food and beverages. If we are picnicking, bring a dish to share, and Tri-City Democrats will provide utensils and plates, and napkins. If we're at the pizza location, TCD will purchase an assortment of pizzas to share. You're on your own for salad bar and beverages, though there are usually pitchers of beer provided by fellow members. We'll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group.
