This past week, I have shared with you about the Alliance’s work in states around the country, electing gun safety champions to office, advocating for stricter gun safety laws, defending these laws, and more. However, none of this could be possible without building a nationally recognized model for gun safety here in Washington State, building upon the tremendous progress we have achieved here.
Gun violence continues to be a dire threat to our communities, and while national progress often feels slow, local action is where real change happens.
This year, with the help of supporters like you, the Alliance for Gun Responsibility achieved key victories that will make Washington a safer place for generations to come. Here are some highlights from our successful efforts:
- New firearm dealer requirements: We passed stronger laws that require firearms dealers to better vet buyers and ensure that firearms stay out of the wrong hands.
- Mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms: By requiring gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms, we are closing a dangerous loophole that has allowed firearms to circulate without accountability.
- Limiting firearms in sensitive locations: We expanded protections around locations where children and vulnerable populations frequent, ensuring that our schools, parks, and community centers remain safe from gun violence.
- A supermajority for gun violence prevention in the legislature: Thanks to our political work, we endorsed over 100 candidates, resulting in our first-ever gun violence prevention (GVP) supermajority in the Washington State legislature. This milestone is critical for pushing forward even stronger laws in the future.

We have seen the results of our progress reflected here in Washington; suicides by firearm in Washington State have decreased while the national average has continued to rise. These are real lives saved thanks to the laws we’ve passed and the continued work of advocates across the state.
