Move On – June 29, 2024

Posted on June 29, 2024

Dear MoveOn member,

We knew that Donald Trump was going to lie during Thursday night’s presidential election debate, but the expanse of his lies was breathtaking.

Saying that the U.S. border is “known as the most dangerous place of anywhere in the world.” Repeating over and over again that Democratic states allow infanticide. It was enraging to see from a man who is steps away from holding the most powerful office in America.

But perhaps the most terrifying outcome of the debate is that already, clips of Trump’s disinformation are being turned into TikTok videos, where according to the Pew Research Center, one-third of people under 30 are getting their news.1

MAGA is dominating social media right now, especially on TikTok, and we just cannot sit back and let it happen, Kendall. The stakes are just too high.

MoveOn has been sounding the alarm about the lies Trump is telling and what he is really planning for his second term, and we are building the infrastructure to ensure that voters across the country hear about it. Right now, we are prepping a cadre of very popular social media influencers who can challenge the MAGA social media machine and make Trump’s disastrous policies go viral. It’s a plan we know will work—but we need your help to see it to fruition.

Will you start a $5 monthly donation to MoveOn and help reach the voters who will make or break the 2024 election?

Yes, I’ll chip in monthly.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.

If you watched the debate, you know that not only did Trump lie, but he dodged every question possible about what he will actually do as president. He didn’t answer questions about his mass deportation plan, his administration’s plan for policing, or even his willingness to respect the results of the upcoming election.

We will never get the truth out of Trump. It’s up to us to get through to voters—especially those “surge voters” in swing states who need to turn out to make a difference—with what Trump’s second term will look like and what’s at stake.

What needs to go viral isn’t videos of Trump but rather critical information about far-right Project 2025 and what Trump has been saying to his donors behind closed doors. We aren’t just building a cadre of social media influencers, we are highlighting MoveOn members’ personal stories. We are relaunching our Real Voter Voices project, which in 2018 used testimonials from ordinary Americans to reach tens of thousands of voters, which helped achieve a blue wave and take back the House of Representatives.

MoveOn is building on that success this year, collecting thousands of testimonial videos from MoveOn members speaking authentically about the stakes of the 2024 election and our civil rights, why they are voting, and the candidates they are supporting. So we’re planning to flood the digital airwaves with members, micro-influencers, and MoveOn’s own accounts.

Research shows that when it comes to election news, people don’t trust traditional media, but instead their friends and family.2 The personal connections our election plan builds—whether it’s through followers of social media influencers, MoveOn members telling their individual stories, or facilitating the ability of voters to easily reach out and talk to would-be voters who need a little push to get to the polls—are the key to defeating MAGA and Trump in November. But this is expensive and painstaking work, and we are a grassroots organization that depends on support from our members.

If we fall short now, there is no making it up—we will be out of time to put all of these plans into action. If you’ve been waiting to make an election donation to MoveOn, it has never been more urgent. Will you start a $5 monthly donation?

Yes, I’ll chip in monthly.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.

The next month will tell us so much about how this election will go.

We just cannot have a repeat of the summer of 2016, when Trump was severely underestimated and Hillary Clinton’s election seemed like a sure thing. Fundraising was low and voters were complacent. But that is exactly what seems to be happening. Right now, MoveOn is facing a serious fundraising shortfall, and it’s threatening our voter turnout program.

Will we look back on this moment as the time when we lost the nation to Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies? Or will we know it as the moment when MoveOn members came together and did everything possible to stop Trump from destroying our democracy?

Every single dollar you give makes a difference, but we need to know we can count on you right now.

Please start a $5 monthly donation.

Yes, I’ll chip in monthly.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

–Evelyn, Allison, Erica, Alexis, and the rest of the team

Want to support MoveOn’s work? Voters just defied history and stopped a MAGA wave of extremism at the polls. But there is more work to do to end the filibuster, codify abortion rights into law, and defend our freedoms, our families, and our futures. We can accomplish all this and more, but only if we work together.

Will you chip in monthly to power our critical work?

Yes, I’ll chip in $5 a month.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.

Time is running out to vote! Drop your ballot off at one of these ballot boxes: www.bentoncountywa.gov/government/elected_officials/auditor/elections/current_election/drop_boxes...If you know someone: a parent, sibling or friend, who doesn’t vote because they have a feeling it doesn’t matter.... Tell them to vote for their kids, to vote for their brother or sister, for their neighbor. It might matter to that other person and we are MUCH stronger when we do things for each other... not for ourselves. #vote #franklincountywa #bentoncountywa #tricities ...

Our iconic Rattlesnake Mountain is known as Laliik to Native Americans, for whom the mountain has been sacred for millennia.  The oft repeated and dubious local claim that it's the tallest treeless mountain neglects the true significance of its geology and ecology.  Its incorporation into the Hanford Site in 1943 initiated a complex history of federal involvement, culminating in its current and persistent off-limits status.

This forum will describe the mountain's history, geology, ecology, and cultural significance and seek to understand perspectives on possible futures for one of the region's treasures.
