June is PRIDE Month! Pride was born out of an act of resistance, standing for the unequivocal right to live an authentic and true-to-self life. From the first brick thrown at Stonewall all the way up to the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act, we have made meaningful progress in building a society that is more welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community, but it’s still not enough.
As with much of the progress we’ve made as a society, the MAGA Republican Party, led by Donald Trump, is working around the clock to curtail this progress—and to actively roll back LGBTQ+ rights across the country.
It’s 2024, and just six months out from Election Day, the LGBTQ+ community needs us more than ever. Just last year, 510 antigay and antitrans bills were passed in the U.S., in Congress and in state legislatures. That’s the most bills on record in a single calendar year.1 The 2024 election isn’t just a battle for our democracy; its outcome will have implications for marginalized communities across the U.S.
Host a house party any time from June 6 to June 9, and let’s collectively fight back to protect and defend the LGBTQ+ community by calling key voters in battleground states about supporting Democrats in November.
We’ll provide you with everything you need to make your event successful, including a beginner resource guide if you need a primer for talking about LGBTQ+ rights, and we’ll help recruit other local MoveOn members to your event. But even if you can gather just a few friends on your own, a handful of people making calls to voters can make a big impact!
Hosting a house party is easy and impactful. Whether you gather at your home, a local park, or another venue, you can bring together a small group of friends, family, or fellow activists to join in the cause.
Just this past weekend,we completed our first major set of election house parties around the country. More than 100 MoveOn members hosted events, from Alaska to Texas. And they were a big success! Together, in living rooms and cafes, in small groups and big gatherings, we churned out thousands of handwritten postcards to key voters in the states and districts that will decide the presidential race and whether MAGA Republicans are in charge of Congress. Now we’re gearing up to give these very same voters a call at June phone bank parties. Can you take the lead in your community by hosting one?
