WSDCC Wrap-up November 11, 2022

Posted on November 11, 2022

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Hello Democrats,

First, I would like to take a moment to wish everyone a happy Veterans Day! Please join me in thanking the brave people who have served our country and preserved our freedom – and the terrific leaders like Senator Patty Murray who are working tirelessly to ensure our veterans receive the services they need here at home. Many, many thanks to our Veterans, their families, and all our active duty military members and families as well.

Second, what a week of elections! I wanted to share a bit more about the results here in Washington State. As of last night’s drop 78% of ballots returned have been counted and we are inching closer to a final picture. Please expect a more in depth update on the election later this month after certification!

Here’s where we currently stand in some of the most important races:

  • All of our Democratic incumbents, including Senator Patty Murray and Congresswoman Kim Schrier’s leads have held, and we are on track to retain every single one of our Democratic seats at the state and federal level!
  • In WA-03, Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez has maintained a lead over MAGA Republican Joe Kent, with 50.8% the vote – meaning we remain on track for a Democratic pickup in the US House of Representatives.
  • Secretary of State Steve Hobbs has won – ushering in a new era of Democratic Secretaries of State who will fight to expand voting rights and lift up the voice of every Washingtonian.
  • We are poised to gain a State Senate seat in LD 42 – go Dr. Sharon Shewmake!
  • We have multiple WA State House pickup opportunities that remain too close to call as of this writing:
    • In LD 10 Clyde Shavers leads incumbent Republican Greg Gilday with 51.3% of total votes. Incumbent Rep. Dave Paul is on track to hold his seat with 53.1%.
    • In LD 26 Adison Richards leads narrowly with 50.2% the vote, Matt Macklin looks unlikely to make up the gap with 44.2%.
    • In LD 42 Rep. Alicia Rule is in a strong position to hold her seat with 51.8% the vote. Newcomer Joe Timmons is on track to retain Sharon Shewmake’s current seat in the House with 51.3%.

You can see all the current results via the Democratic (I love saying that!) Secretary of State’s website here:

https://results.vote.wa.gov/results/20221108/legislative-all.html

While Democrats are unlikely to hold the U.S. House, as of last night’s results, the jury is still out on which Party will control the Senate. It’s entirely possible we won’t know the answer until after next month’s runoff in Georgia.

As long as there are opportunities to win, we will keep working. Thank you for standing with us in this critical fight!

I also want to take a moment for a special thank you to Doug White and Natasha Hill – fighting tough congressional races in “red turf”. They both did outstanding work, and I hope they will stay committed to the fight – please join me in thanking both of them.

We also had so many great candidates for the legislature who came up just short and/or ran against tough odds in red districts – folks like Jessica Wadhams, Sandy Kaiser, James DeHart, Julianne Gale, Carrie Wilbur, Holly Stanton, Matt Macklin, Cameron Severns, Jamie Smith, Cara Cusack, Kelli Hughes-Ham, Duncan Camacho, Joe Kear, Terri Niles, Jan Corn, Jeff Strickler, Lindsey Keesling, Michaela Kelso, and Ted Cummings. Thank you all so very much for standing up for democratic values!

WORKING FOR WASHINGTON

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for Tuesday’s Election Night Party at the Bellevue Westin!

It was terrific to get together with hundreds of Democrats from across Washington State to reconnect, watch results pour in, and celebrate our victories! We are thrilled to be able to bring our Party together in person once more and it was so great to feel the energy in the room and hear from our fantastic Democratic leaders.

Thanks again so much to each and every one of you for doing the work that put us on track for a night of victories for Democrats statewide!

DEMOCRATS IN THE NEWS

Democrats Might Have Pulled Off the Biggest Midterm Shock in Decades

Overall, the polls were basically right. It was the vibes that were wrong.

Murray Wins Sixth Term in Washington, Overcoming a Tough Challenge

Patty Murray, one of the most senior Democrats, beat back a surprisingly stiff challenge from Tiffany Smiley, a Republican and political newcomer.

WA Democrat Schrier leads 8th Congressional District race

In a high-stakes race that could help determine control of Congress, U.S. Rep. Kim Schrier led Republican challenger Matt Larkin in Tuesday’s vote count in Washington’s swing 8th Congressional District.

Steve Hobbs leads in WA secretary of state race

Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs — looking to become the first Democrat elected secretary of state in more than 60 years — led his nonpartisan challenger, Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson, 50% to 46.9% on election night.

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez leads Trump-backed Joe Kent after Tuesday results

Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez led Joe Kent, the Donald Trump-backed Republican candidate, in election night returns in Southwest Washington’s 3rd Congressional District.

Election deniers are trailing up and down the ballot in WA races

Voters largely pushed back on Republican candidates who supported conspiratorial lies about the 2020 presidential election.

Inslee to attend COP27, will highlight continued urgency and importance of subnational leadership in climate action

Gov. Jay Inslee will attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt between Nov. 13 and Nov. 16.

THANK YOU

I want to take one more chance to say thank you to each and every one of you for your role in leading Democrats to victory statewide. Whether you donated, volunteered, or just cast your vote for our terrific candidates, your work made a major impact and we are so grateful.

With most votes now counted, we are in a very strong position and we owe that all to you. We will keep you updated as final results come in and more races are called. In the meantime, please rest assured that we are doing everything in our power to make sure every vote is counted and we’re not leaving a single opportunity on the table.

Additionally, we are working with our friends at the Georgia Democrats and the ASDC to understand what help will be needed in the Georgia runoff on December 6th. There are already opportunities to volunteer virtually (sign up here!), and there will likely be opportunities to go to Georgia and doorknock. Additionally, I’ll be co-hosting a Zoom fundraiser for Senator Warnock later this month and we will send out information as soon as we have it. We will keep you posted!

Keep in touch, stay engaged, and as always, thank you for all you do!

With gratitude,

Washington State Democratic Party
