Join Us for a briefing on Food Policy in WA
With our national partners at Presbyterian Hunger Program, we are co-sponsoring Food Week of Action next week, October 10-17. This year’s theme is People and Planet First, to highlight groups and initiatives that are building equitable and sustainable food systems, while also tackling the economic and racial drivers of hunger, poverty, and oppression. Hunger is such a core issue for faith communities across our state that have for decades provided food pantries, community meals, and mutual aid for your neighbors. We want to especially invite you who have been on the front lines to a briefing next week about Food Policy in WA — Thursday, October 13, 10-11am, on Zoom. RSVP for the link here
Together we have made great strides in recent years to ensure children had access to meals at schools, families and seniors could get healthy food at farmers’ markets, and emergency food was available during the pandemic. We have the opportunity now to make sure those supports continue.
Kristin Ang, Policy Engagement Director for FAN, will be joined by colleagues from the Anti-Hunger and Nutrition Coalition, including Christina Wong, Director of Public Policy for Northwest Harvest, and Rita Chang, Right to Food Campaign Manager at Northwest Harvest. They will:
- Recap of last week’s White House Conference on Hunger
- Provide updates on reauthorization of the Farm Bill and Child Nutrition in Congress.
- Introduce you to the Right to Food campaign.
- Preview the Anti-Hunger and Nutrition Coalition’s state legislative agenda for 2023, as well as the intersections with FAN’s anti-poverty agenda.
- Give you an easy way to take action and/or submit an op-ed.

October 10, 6:30pm in Olympia and online, please join Interfaith Works and FAN to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day in an interactive engagement with author and activist Sarah Augustine. Explore how the Doctrine of Discovery continues to impact Indigenous people today through a case study of the Indian Child Welfare Act. Sarah Augustine is a Pueblo woman who lives with her family in White Swan, WA. She is author of The Land is Not Empty: Following Jesus in Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery. October 13, 6:30pm in Seattle (in-person only): Mark Charles will lead a conversation on his book Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery. The son of an American woman (of Dutch heritage) and a Navajo man, Mark teaches the complexities of American history regarding race, culture, and Christendom in order to help forge a path of healing and conciliation for the nation.
